Tomorrow I will be visiting Clayton, the Frick mansion in Pittsburgh,PA. Before Henry Frick built his magnificent mansion on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, the family lived in this house. Lovingly preserved by his daughter Helen Frick, it now open to the public. I will post some current photos after my tour. #pittsburghmansions #gildedage #gildedagemansions #frickcollection #thefrickcollection #pittsburgh #historicpittsburgh
@jhogarty_ If you love old houses and buildings you will enjoy this Instagram account @jhogarty_ The house pictured here is the Haas-Lilienthal house built in 1886, San Francisco, California.
This beautiful home is located at Tuxedo Park, New York. Tuxedo Park was founded at the height of the Gilded Age as an escape from the formality of Newport, but just as prestigious. A private enclave where many millionaires built spectacular mansions over looking lakes and surrounded by hills. This home here was designed by architect Bruce Price in 1886 and is now for sale. For more photos and to learn more about the history of this elegant home please click on the link to Tuxedo Park Realtor at the top of the page here. This will be a small group of no more than 25 participants and we already have reservations made by some of my followers on Instagram and Facebook. Hope some of you can attend.
The Satterwhite mansion, Great Neck, Long Island, NY. When first built the interiors were designed in an overdone Colonial Revival style. Later it was made much more elegant. See second photo for the change. This house called Martin Hall no longer exists.
@lyndhurst_mansion Such a beautiful photo!
For fans of the original TV Series, Dark Shadows, the old house was real. It was located right next to the @lyndhurst_mansion which was also later used in the two Dark Shadows films as the ancestral Collins family home, Collinwood. The Old House seen here once stood overlooking the Hudson River near Tarrytown. It was one of those rather ordinary country houses of the first generation then when Colonial Revivalism become popular, it was surrounded with a colonnaded facade. One can see the older house peeking through in the center of the roof. The so called New house was much larger and the TV series used Seaview Terrace in Newport for the opening shots. The Old House here also was only used for exterior views and both houses on the series used sets for the interiors that bore no resemblance to the houses used for exteriors. The Old House was pretty much abandoned when the series was filmed in the mid 1960’s. It was lost to a fire a few years later. If one pokes around the place it stood today from a public trail, one can find a few garden elements. #darkshadows #darkshadows1968 #darkshadowstvshow #darkshadowsoldhouse #collinwood #barnabascollins #collinsporthistoricalsociety
The famous Potter Palmer mansion, Chicago, Illinois. Built in early 1880’s it was one of the most elaborate and largest mansions among many that formed the Millionaire’s Row on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. This mansion and most of the others are now gone. The Palmer mansion was demolished in 1950. I will post some interiors next. #gildedage #gildedagemansions #mansion #mansions
